Barrow, Lee (2022) Will the Coalition Forces’ withdrawal turn Afghanistan in to a terrorist safe haven that facilitates international terrorism?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to critically analyse the departure of the Coalition Forces from Afghanistan on the threat of Afghanistan becoming a terrorist safe haven that facilitates large-scale international terrorist attacks. The study will cover the rise of the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, War on Terror, and reasons for withdrawal of the Coalition Forces. Including a critical assessment of literature on disparate
viewpoints of Afghanistan becoming a terrorist safe haven.
A sequential mixed methods research design has been utilised by this study. An online survey has been conducted to provide a quantitative understanding of the problematic at hand, which is further explored through qualitative interviews that make up Phase Two of this study.
Historically, terrorist organisations set up camp in countries with weak, corrupt governments, or those that are sympathetic to their causes. The Taliban has established a “government” that is corrupt and weak. Many within the organisation sympathise with other terrorist organisations. Ultimately, the research has shown that currently Taliban is not to be trusted to run a legitimate government or cut ties with international terrorist groups and Afghanistan will become a safe haven for international terrorists.
