Crowder, Daniel John (2022) A study into the challenges faced by the police in dealing with domestic abuse within England and Wales. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This research study critically analysed the challenges faced by the police when dealing with domestic abuse. The objective of this study was to provide an outline of the legal system in England and Wales and its role in domestic abuse, current police tactics in dealing with domestic abuse and subsequent challenges and ascertain any recommendations that can be used moving forward or any possibility for further study. The structure of this dissertation utilised qualitative research in the form of a literature review to explore previous research about the subject determining that the policing of domestic abuse is a precarious issue and dealing with such a complex social issue as domestic abuse with all-encompassing criminal sanctions such as mandatory arrest of a suspect, can paradoxically increase further incidents of domestic abuse.
Policing domestic abuse is a complex issue fraught with challenges which stem from both fluctuating internal and external factors often beyond the remit of the police’s control. The study identified that the police, although the symbolism of government and upholders of the law should not be the only custodians left to deal with such an issue and that ultimately domestic abuse is a wider societal issue where support services, education and awareness should be utilised.
