Cabasa, Karen Macadangdang (2022) How ethnic groups are portrayed in the media and how it affects society today. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This project investigates the representations there are in the media in this current period of time, how it specifically affects different ethnic individuals and why it is significant. Analysis was done on ways to combat the issues revolving around representation and encourage positive representation to prevent psychological impacts on minorities. A short-animated artefact has been constructed explaining the issues of whitewashing, casting issues, underrepresentation and negative stereotypes. The artefact was shown to ethnic individuals through an online questionnaire filled with a mixture of open and closed questions. Analysis of the results show that portrayal is significant, because it shapes the way people view themselves and others around them. Due to the power that the media has on mass audiences, everyone’s behaviour and lifestyle experience would differ which can either be positive or negative. Thus, making it crucial for everyone to be aware of issues, allowing them to express themselves to resolve and prevent any future problems.
