Chambers, Kehron (2022) Mobile app prototype “roommates”. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The majority of young adults attending university that move away from home are not equipped with the life skills or responsibilities necessary to live alone or with others. The purpose of this project is to see how well they cope with developing independence and the struggles that adulthood presents. Qualitative research and observations were carried out with the purpose of justifying a way to combat this problem, which led to the development of the application ‘Roommates.’
The author of this dissertation is using their own experience of moving to university as reference for this study and the idea was generated based off an unmet need for social accountability, management and communication.
Key findings found that students had difficulty adjusting to living away from home and having to manage domestic responsibilities. These findings were important as it set the framework for the UX Design methodology which was used to develop the application. Putting the user first and having a user-centred approach in this design philosophy was beneficial as highlighted in the literature review.
Going forward, the advancement of technology in daily society can help ‘Roommates’ serve as a pioneer for human-to-human interaction over a digital space to tackle ongoing issues and challenging experiences for young adults that are not currently being addressed within the social networking industry.
