Murage, Wilson (2022) Constructing destruction. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The aim of this project is to discuss the different methods used in the visual effects industry to create destruction sequences over the years and determine why the current model has been adopted. The goal is to compose a destruction sequence based around a well-known structure within the Portsmouth city, Greetham Tower, using the current model for destruction utilised in the industry. The final artefact is a short video of a meteor striking the top of the tower, demonstrating rigid body dynamic destruction and smoke simulations, using Houdini, which is composited over recorded footage using Foundry’s Nuke. The research focuses on the history of destruction in films and the techniques used. The report details the full pipeline for the creation of the artefact, whilst analysing the purpose behind the route taken.
