Abstract

The following report details the production process of the artefact, The Sons of the King. This project's aims are to create an original work, in the style of early silhouette animation, using digital technology; taking inspiration initially from Lotte Reiniger’s work with The Adventures of Prince Achmed (Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed, 1926). The project also borrows elements from Ralph Bashki’s adaptation of The Lord of the Rings (1978). The Sons of the King attempts to add to the medium with modern methods and an original story. Silhouette animation in Lotte Reiniger’s case was done with stop motion paper puppets. This project uses digital artwork and software to recreate this process. The Story has its roots in Germanic and Arabic folklore, like The Adventures of Prince Achmed, along with history from 10th century England. The piece is accompanied with music, provided by Oscar Brewer, which is haunting and ethereal. The story explores themes of jealousy and the dangers of coveting power, these themes are shown throughout, complemented by the film's dark fantasy genre. The demographic this film caters for are older children and teenagers, as there is a moral to the story and folklore has always been for children. Its secondary audience being a more mature one that would enjoy a downbeat dramatisation of an invented folktale.
