Sou, Ka Fai (2022) Creating a realistic animation based on the reference. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
The dissertation aims to explore the processes (mainly the use of reference) practised for animation in the industry to understand the reasoning behind these methods and their influence on the quality of the animated films produced. The literature review contains various sources regarding the importance of reference in animation and the elements of its pipeline. The proposed ideas are then supported and extended by preliminary research conducted to form the basis of the artefact, which is a copy of a process carried out in the industry. This artefact allows the observations made during this process to be evaluated based on information found in the literature and a visual representation of the impact on animation quality throughout. The animation was produced using a parkour video on YouTube in Autodesk Maya then edited in Adobe Premiere. This artefact was then validated through observation to ensure its relevance to the dissertation title. The findings of the artefact and the study conducted led to the conclusion that industrial techniques have been established to make high-quality animation while utilising efficient phases in the process.
