Searle, Jayme-Leigh (2022) Women empowerment magazine. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Mainstream media, particularly magazines, fail to accurately portray Women, often depicting them as sexual beings or putting them in a box, in an attempt for women to conform to perfectionist beauty standards set out by society. There is a complete disregard for normal, ordinary women, regardless of their age, body type or skin colour and they are rarely ever celebrated or acknowledged. Magazines that elevate and inspire women in a positive way are absent within the media industry and research has shown that the constant exposure to derogatory and unrealistic media has had a significant impact on mental wellbeing, with an increase of eating disorders, depression and lack of self-esteem amongst many young girls and women. The objective was to produce a magazine using a range of software from Adobe Creative Suite and challenge these negative representations through the use of photography, colour and design. The primary purpose of the magazine was to empower the everyday woman, with particular focus on being size and race inclusive.
