Phillips, Caleb William (2022) Comparative analysis of approaches to parasocial engagement creation between player and game AI. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This paper aims to comparatively analyse different methods and mechanics used to create engagement through Parasocial Interactions between the player and game AI. To accomplish this two frameworks for parasocial behaviour have been consulted, one created via a combination of researched points and one from a study. These points include ‘Parasocial Interactions’, ‘Parasocial Relationships’ and ‘Parasocial Breakups.’ Alongside this, we have defined the type of AI we are looking at as the typical, pre-programmed ‘Non-Player Character’ seen in most games. Although other points of discussion may be brought up these aforementioned topics are the focal point as to keep the scope of the research project reasonable. The games analysed seemed to have very similar approaches when creating parasocial engagement, but some had different objectives and end goals to the interaction. Despite being qualitative and interpretive by nature this paper has done its best to stick to the main points of comparison, although some statistics around loneliness have been consulted as extra analysis.
