Igweonu, Ekene Glory (2022) What constitutes good practice in service delivery with adults having Dual Diagnosis?. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Comorbidity of mental health and substance use disorders (also known as ‘dual diagnosis’) is prevalent among people who access mental health and addiction services. Existing literatures have shown that treatment with persons having these disorders is complex and challenging, due to the interaction between substances and mental functioning. Practice standards have recommended that people suffering from both mental and substance use disorders receive integrated treatment.
The topic of this dissertation is what constitutes good practice in service delivery with adults having dual diagnosis? The dissertation is a literature review that critically appraised five papers published between the years 2017-2022. Thematic analysis was completed which provided insight into resources identified to support recovery from mental health and substance misuse disorder. This included peer support, acceptance in the community and an enabling environment for sustained growth. This dissertation concludes with recommendations for social work practice.
