Watts, Carla (2022) To be skinny is to be beautiful and popular: the impact of chick flicks on females’ body image. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation seeks to investigate the impact that watching chick flicks had on female body image. An analysis of the existing literature on chick flicks illustrates that scholars tend to briefly mention body image without thoroughly examining it as a theme in itself, nor do they consider how viewers are affected. To examine the impact of these films, this dissertation focuses on three well-researched chick flicks, Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and Bridesmaids (2011) and how they each address body image. It then analyses personal testimonies from female viewers of these films to gain valuable insight into how they feel they have been affected by the film’s approach to body image. It is argued that body image is embedded within chick flicks and has a negative impact on female viewers. There is a strong consensus that whilst these films are a popular genre, there needs to be a re-evaluation of how these films discuss body image. This research has signalled that the overarching message of these films is that being slim is superior and leads to ultimate success in all areas of life. Furthermore, this dissertation also refers to psychological studies on body image to evidence the relationship between poor body image and eating disorders. Henceforth, this dissertation provides a fruitful contribution to research on chick flicks and how they influence female’s body image.
