Fletcher, Jack (2022) The relationship between African underdevelopment and dependency: the colonial legacy in Ghana and Cote D'Ivoire. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This study focuses on the relationship between underdevelopment and dependency and whether they are the legacy of colonialism in Africa. Through historiographical analysis both dependency and underdevelopment are shown to be inexorably linked, and through evidence given in secondary sources the study demonstrates how underdevelopment, which is the primary legacy of colonialism, invariably leads to dependency through FDI and foreign aid. When applied to the historical context of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire this study uncovers that the state of dependency that both states have found themselves caught in since independence can, without fail, be traced back to a form of underdevelopment that the relevant state is suffering from. Through this realisation the study concludes that both countries and its populations are still suffering heavily from the legacy of colonialism.
