Paladugu, Nithya Nuthan (2022) Development of mature BIM framework for SMEs: an Indian perspective. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The utilisation of building information Modelling (BIM) in every aspect of projects and economic growth of countries with constant uptick across the globe. Most countries such as the USA, UK, Canada, and other developed countries have higher utilisation of BIM. Various public and private stakeholders are considering the potential of BIM to make different phases such as design, construction, and Maintenance in a much more advanced process with minimal environmental impact. In India, which contributes more to the global construction industry with human resources, specialists are also in the phase of mature BIM transition in every involved project. Despite such potential, the trend of the Government of India with the policies toward mandating BIM for public projects and as-built BIM assets for existing projects has hindered the growth process from the past.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) contribute much more than MNCs to India's start-up incubators and ecosystem. They contribute almost 80% or more to the construction industry. Most recent graduates and young professionals work in this ecosystem of start-ups of SMEs rather than MNCs.

This study proposes a chain organisation within SMEs responsible for a staged approach to each project stage with BIM. A varied research method is adapted in this report, with an initial literature study on BIM and SMEs globally and focusing on such aspects in the Indian construction industry. Later, a guidance/framework is created on facts found in literature and adaptions from other authors where broader aspects need to be discussed. Finally, a survey is carried out of industry professionals for their opinions and reviews for BIM in India and a comparison to facts with literature research.

The findings in these three report stages revealed that BIM is more feasible to be deployed and integrated to higher maturity levels within SMEs with the proposed guidance/framework. This research can potentially be used as a reference in future studies in BIM for India.
