Carr, Catherine (2022) BIM implementation on rail projects: a study of BIM usage within the UK rail industry. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
The technological advancements in recent years have changed the way that projects are being delivered. However, there is a slow uptake of the use of BIM on UK rail construction projects. This research paper aims to investigate the extent and effect of BIM implementation on UK rail projects, to understand if there is a reason to why BIM advancements may not be getting used to their full potential. This research has conducted two methods of data collection. An online survey using a randomised approach was shared among the rail industry, and three interviews were also undertaken to provide rich data on individuals personal experience on how BIM has been utilised on UK rail projects. Descriptive analysis of the results was completed, and findings found that the UK rail industry are implementing BIM Level 2 on their projects. However, there is still a lack of BIM dimensions beings used out with 3D. The need for industry professionals was also concluded, with an age gap on BIM uptake being clearly visible.
