Wilkin, Charlotte (2022) The rise of the Right?: does the UK underestimate the threat and risk posed from right-wing extremists?: a review of the literature surrounding right-wing extremism. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation analyses right-wing extremism and terrorism in the UK by exploring the root causes of terrorism and extremism, the UK’s legislative approach to tackling the problem and how the online sphere plays a pivot role in the expansion of right-wing extremism. It explores how the macro factors such as the European Union referendum in 2016 ignited an anti-immigration rhetoric and how the murder of MP Jo Cox led to the first right-wing organisation becoming proscribed in the UK. In addition, the governments Counter Terrorism Strategy is analysed, paying particular attention to the Prevent strategy which has contributed to the creation of the suspect Muslim community, therefore alienating the population, and providing a free pass to hatred. Furthermore, the online space is examined in a bid to understand how terrorist organisations use the internet to further their ideological goals and similarities are identified between Islamic extremist media publications and right-wing manifestos, illustrating that there are tactical resemblances in their rhetoric which may assist with police and intelligence agencies with tackling the rising threat.
