Smith, Emily Victoria Ann (2022) The role of regulatory standards in counter-terrorist financing within private sector banking. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
The use of regulatory standards in the financial services is a reliable method of strengthening defensive measures to combat economic crimes by limiting the prevalence and harm of offending behaviour. This harm can damage the reputation of the financial sector impacting future trade if a nation is seen to be a facilitator of economic crimes, as well as sustaining the growth and maintenance of proscribed organisations, whose financing is described as wide-scale and opportunistic which requires stringent safeguards in place to prevent this. It is necessary to understand the role of regulatory standards in preventing the rise of economic crimes so that the development of future regulations can be justified. In this study, counter-terrorist financing regulatory standards are examined in the form of a literature review comprised of carefully selected information, exploring regulations from the UK Government as well as private regulatory bodies in order to identify where these regulations are successful, and where they fail to adequately prevent an offence from occurring.
