Restrepo, Alejandro Salazar (2023) The production and testing of concrete using incinerator bottom ash (IBA) as a cement replacement. (unpublished BEng dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This research project investigates the optimum percentage replacement of incinerator bottom ash to produce concrete that has similar characteristics to the one used in the industry. To work out the best percentage cement replacement, three different mixes were produced and tested to find their physical and mechanical properties. To do this, particle size distribution, density and compression testing were carried out. The project's main component was compression testing which was carried out at 28 days of curing to determine the maximum strength and strength gain for four different mortar mixes, including 10%, 20%, and 30% cement replacement mixes and a control mix. Results showed that all mixes reached a minimum compressive strength of 30Mpa. In addition, the three replacement mixes and the control mix were monolithic tank tested to find the hazardous chemicals and heavy metals that leached out when the incinerator bottom ash was in contact with water for different intervals of time. According to the test's findings, aluminium was the main element that leached out. However, by improving recycling and raw material processing, the amount of aluminium that leaches out can be decreased. Because they are mixed with other aggregates, elements and minerals that leach out are reduced as they are bound within the concrete.
