See, Simon A. (2023) To assess the social value of historic buildings in high street heritage action zones. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Since the 2008 downturn in the economy and the steady rise of internet shopping, high streets in the United Kingdom have been the focus of a number of regeneration strategies. With the majority of town and city centres being made up from a mixture of buildings from different periods of history, this research paper examines how buildings that make up part of a 2019 regeneration scheme known as High Street Heritage Action Zones (HSHAZ) have social values for the local communities that interact with them as part of their everyday lives.
To be able to apprise the understanding and use of social values within heritage practice, secondary data was used to evaluate interpretations from academic writing and heritage reports on the evolution of social impacts in this sector. From this research, themes and ideas were further explored in a focus group made up from professional stakeholders from regional HSHAZ projects.
Findings from this combination of primary and secondary data revealed that understanding how people form connections to local historic buildings can sometimes better inform their future use and reveal unofficial hidden histories that have defined and shaped communities.
