Irvine, Amber Victoria (2023) Determining the impact of Active Travel Investment as a solution to meeting the Net Zero Agenda by 2050: a study in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Bournemouth, Christchuch and Poole Council have declared a climate emergency and have set a target to meet Net Zero by 2050. In order to meet this goal, there needs to be a rapid uptake in active travel as a sustainable alternative to private car use. This project aims to determine the impact of active travel installation on the uptake of active travel utilisation to gain an understanding of the value of investment in this area. This was undertaken by first identifying the impact that active travel installation has on road traffic volumes within BCP by reviewing traffic count data before and after the installation of active travel schemes. Before and after volumes for cyclists was also reviewed. Carbon Emissions were then calculated, based on the schemes before and after construction, to estimate the emissions saved. Aspects of road safety were also considered, including a review of the accidents occurring in the immediate vicinity of the schemes before and after construction. The findings were compared with the existing literature on the subject. Overall, two of the three active travel schemes reviewed found there was a decrease in cars and increase in cyclists after construction. All of the schemes found that carbon emissions and accidents decreased after construction.
