Wilkinson, Alexander (2023) Translation & commentary of Pierre Halte’s ‘La langue française est-elle menacée par les emojis ?’, French to English. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This research project contains a 2000-word translation of a French TEDx Talk by Pierre Halte, which was published in 2022. The talk focuses on how we use emojis to express ourselves and whether they are a threat to the French language. This translation is important as it gives an insight into how seriously the French take the protection of their language and offers English speakers an opportunity to learn about this supposed threat. The translation is from French to British English and the goal is to provide English-speaking readers with a faithful translation of the talk, all while maintaining the aspects which make it identifiable as first and foremost a speech delivered to a crowd. The research project includes a 3000-word commentary which discusses the source text, the transcription process and the challenges faced during translation. It also includes a literature review. The translation strategies used are supported by translation theory and various secondary sources.
