Guranna, Elisha Shantal (2023) A study of the linguistic landscape in Mauritius since independence in 1968: how has colonialism shaped the linguistic landscape of Mauritius?. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
The aim of this study was to gain further insight into the linguistic landscape of Mauritius since its independence in 1968. The study focuses in particular on how colonisation shaped the island's sociolinguistic landscape and how language is used in various social contexts in the present day. These questions will help to further the research in this area, which can be seen in the results of the questionnaire and follow-up interviews. Data was collected from a group of 177 Mauritian residents via an online form. Data from the questionnaire was quantitative, however, follow-up interviews provided a more qualitative insight into some of the responses gathered. Analysis of this data showed the languages spoken by Mauritians and the use of these languages in different social contexts in Mauritius. The results confirmed that the sociolinguistic landscape of Mauritius is indeed unique and allowed for comparison between Mauritius and other post-colonial countries.
