Fielder, Madilyn (2023) Translation & commentary of ‘Conversaciones en la Mesa: Mujer y Conflict Armado’ by the ‘Organización Nacional Indígena de Colombia’ (ONIC). (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
The research project presented is a translation from Spanish to English of extracts taken from the publication ‘Conversaciones en la Mesa: Mujer y Conflict Armado’ by the ‘Organización Nacional Indígena de Colombia’ (ONIC), published in 2003. The chosen extracts from the publication focus specifically on women’s rights and the displacement of people in the context of Colombian armed conflict in the late 20th century. What follows is a translation commentary of the most significant challenges and difficulties that arose throughout the translation. The overall structure of commentary takes the form of five sections. These include a Source Text analysis where I will touch upon ‘Skopos theory’ and a ‘functionalist approach’ to translation, translation strategies and challenges faced, culture specific items (CSIs), and the utilisation of parallel texts and online corpora which facilitated the translation.
