Abstract

This research explores three aims surrounding positive behaviour strategies used to improve behaviour in schools. Successful teaching and learning requires effective behaviour management. Positive behaviour approaches have become more common as educators use personal-centred approaches to explicitly teach the children what behaviour should look like. Student teacher relationships have had a profound effect on the behaviour of students with improved academic achievements as a result. However, with the increase in exclusions, teacher perceptions and the conflicting views around this topic, questions are being asked as to if this method is the best way to reduce challenging behaviours. An evaluation of both qualitative and quantitative data was conducted through literature reviews. The study concluded that although changes have been prompted by Ofsted and Government policies, current practices in schools are not consistent from classroom to classroom let alone school to school. However, the positive behaviour approach does appear to be the most used method and the most effective way in dealing with behaviours that challenge.
