Primmer, Victoria Mai (2023) Horror through art: exploring its visual presentation using prop asset production for games. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This research explores the key motifs of the horror genre and folk horror subgenre and how these can be practically applied within a game context. Through creating 3D assets for an external client, the process of adapting key themes to meet the requirements of a specific brief is addressed to create a framework to aid other artists looking to work with a client. With current gaps in literature failing to explore how game specific techniques can be used to present key motifs of the horror and folk horror genre, this study looks to address this by combining visual motifs found in a variety of media with current industry standard asset production methods. Creating the artefact consisting of gravestones, tomb and mausoleum modular kits was conducted using Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, Meshroom, Photoshop and UE4 for showcasing and testing the assets. To create the models, techniques such as photogrammetry, trimsheets and procedural materials were applied, with their effectiveness in presenting key themes of the horror genre being exemplified in the artefact.
