Rutherford, Gregory (2023) What makes good character design?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
In video games, characters are another means by which stories can be subtly told to players. Creating a strong design for a character requires not only a solid understanding of art, but also a stronger understanding of how we as humans react to certain design choices - this can range from the colours used and the emotions we associate with them, to the silhouette of a character model and how strong silhouettes still have recognisable elements even if they are veiled. This report addresses the question “what makes good character design?” and analyses the results of a questionnaire based around character design as well as covering the development process of a character model as an artefact for this project. Good character design will vary from game to game but essential elements include strong colour palettes, distinct silhouettes and the use of visual metaphors or “show don’t tell”. The artefact for this project takes these into account to match visually with a steam-punk inspired environment while sporting distinct features.
