Abstract

In this study I investigated the effects that game polish has on the overall game feel, art assets, animations, and refined game mechanics all fall under this category. I gathered two groups of participants ans randomly assigning each group to a version of a first-person platformer for them to play test and then fill out a questionnaire to provide feedback on the experience, the difference between the two artefacts is the level of polish, one artefact had little to no polish whilst the other had a much higher level of polish. I spent several months creating my artefacts in Unreal Engine 5.0 using agile methodology to help me meet the deadline for my completed artefact. My findings indicated that the group that play tested the version with high levels of polish had a more positive experience compared to the no polish group whose results indicated towards a more negative experience. However, game feel and studies on game feel in different genres of games may produce different results. Further research must be carried out on all aspects of game feel to determine the influence of game polish.
