Morley, Danielle (2023) How neurodiversity impacts video games. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Neurodiversity is a concept in psychology used to describe anyone with cognitive differences than a general populace. This project explores three disorders within this, ADHD, ASD, and Dyslexia, and how these disorders impact an adult’s ability to play video games in a hobby and casual setting. This project aims to establish a link between these three disorders and game mechanics to examine areas of accessibility in games that need to be addressed or researched further.
The research focuses on existing literature regarding neurodiversity, game accessibility, neurodiversity, and games, and primary research consisting of interviews and surveys. Participants in this study are both formally diagnosed and suspected of having ADHD, ASD, or Dyslexia.
The research found that a majority of game mechanics impacts primarily those with ADHD and ASD, however, there was a limited number of participants diagnosed with dyslexia, and therefore difficult to draw reliable conclusions and trends in data
