Bennett, Kim (2023) Real-time plant growth simulation: a volumetric approach. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Video games environments are often covered with a wide variety of plants and trees, but rarely are these structures modelled with considerations to biological processes and environmental factors. This report seeks to prove a basis for using functional-structural plant models in Unreal Engine 5, and a simplified implementation of the GreenLab model is presented. The topic of distance field rendering is also examined, as well as exploring the raymarching technique used to volumetrically render the plants by describing their shape as distance functions. The real-time rendering performance is measured using Unreal’s profiling tools and the suitability for its application in games is evaluated, with insight into identifying areas of optimisation and visual improvement.
