Hill, Alex (2023) Porting a large-scale project from Unrel Engine 4.19 to Unreal Engine 5. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Over the course of this project, I detail my experience of porting a AAA Sci-Fi game in development at the University of Portsmouth from Unreal Engine 4.19 to Unreal Engine 5 under the direction of a client. The client for this project is a senior lecturer at the University with experience of working both with this project and as a client. I review the benefits of the new ‘Nanite’ and ‘Lumen’ features of Unreal Engine 5 in addition to investigating porting in Unreal Engine in general. There is detail throughout this project of the research and development of the methods used to reach this goal and how this process improved areas of my skillset that would help to prepare me to work in industry. The end goal of this project is to provide a basis for other students to continue working on the project in future years, furthermore, provide myself a foundation in Unreal Engine that I can use to boost my own ability as a developer.
