Snagg, Tyson (2023) The battle of the consoles: exploring the factors that influence game console preference. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This study explores the factors that influence player preference and establishes the leading factor in game console preference. The study employed secondary research and primary research, in the form of a quantitative online survey, to address the research question. The survey received 41 responses, which revealed that 29% of the participants rated performance as the most crucial factor in console preference, closely followed by community with 27%. Other important factors included exclusive games, brand loyalty, and price, each accounting for 12% of the respondents. The dominance of PlayStation was evident throughout the research, both from an ownership and preference perspective. Multiple console ownership was prevalent, with PlayStation and Switch or Xbox being the most popular pairings. The findings highlight the importance of performance and community in console preference and provide recommendations for future research. Moreover, the study gives insight into the factors that may drive future console sales and offers a basis for game console manufacturers to develop their products and marketing strategies. The results also suggest the need for game console manufacturers to consider the different preferences and priorities of their customers, particularly those in different age groups and regions.
