Broker, George (2023) The positive & negative effects of fungible tokens on artistry. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reach a definitive conclusion on whether or not Non Fungible Tokens are an overall positive or negative influence on artistry, as well as provide a clear insight into the mechanics and history of Non Fungible Tokens as a whole to be understood by any individual with no prior knowledge of the technology. I have used research that is relevant and credible to the discussion with a focus on fact based research and an awareness of any bias that may be decipherable within the works I have looked at. I have found that there are many negatives to consider as well as many risks to not just artists but primarily to consumers and the environment. However, my overall conclusion is that despite the obvious issues and risks that the technology poses, it does have a positive impact on the industry of digital artwork, physical art, music, audiovisual media, video content etc. from the perspective of an artist. This research implicates that considering the overall positive impact Non Fungible Tokens have had on artistry and will continue to have, there is still a lot of potential which is unrealised and the industry of Non Fungible Tokens has a lot of innovation to be discovered still despite the risks and negatives that are also explored within this work.
