Abdulaziz, Edris (2023) The impact of implementing digital twin technology on educational asset management. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Educational institutions, characterised by diverse spaces such as lecture halls, laboratories, and dormitories, grapple with the challenge of ensuring optimal environmental conditions. The age of these infrastructures further complicates the task, with a significant proportion of university buildings in the UK standing for over four decades. To solve this challenge, this research delves into the potential of Digital Twin technology, a digital replica of real-world objects or systems. Through a comprehensive questionnaire targeting professionals in facility management within educational institutions, this study gauges the awareness, perceived benefits, and barriers of integrating Digital Twins into educational asset management. The findings reveal a moderate familiarity with the technology, with operational efficiency emerging as the top perceived benefit. However, implementation costs and the lack of skilled personnel are significant barriers. The study underscores the urgency of integrating advanced systems like Digital Twins, especially given the gaps in monitoring indoor air quality in educational spaces. By bridging these gaps, institutions can prioritise student welfare, ensuring a conducive learning environment.
