Poliakova, Polina (2023) Enhancing urban mobility and accessibility through BIM-GIS integration in smart cities. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

At the moment, the issue of combining BIM and GIS to solve challenging problems at the intersection of these technologies is relevant. One of these tasks is the problem of planning the development and use of transport infrastructure. This paper presents an example of combining the benefits of new technologies in the field of BIM and GIS, which will create a new approach to solving the problems of the transport sector. The main advantages of using GIS technologies are the ability to model city streets, traffic, route planning, and effective public transport network development.
BIM provides opportunities for developing project documentation, including for complex infrastructure facilities, such as tunnels and flyovers, and for integrating proposed and implemented projects into all the necessary city management systems to accompany these projects in the future. However, the complexity of current BIM and GIS systems requires the consistent participation of specialists with access to disparate and poorly integrated data. At the same time, there has been an increase in the use of the generative approach in both BIM and GIS technologies in recent years. However, at the time of writing this report, such a combination of technologies has yet to be found to solve the problems of planning and developing transport infrastructure. The contribution of this study is to develop a concept that works on open data using the example of Greater Manchester.
The implementation of this approach will, in the future, save the time of valuable specialists in the collection, processing, and generation of promising options for the development of transport infrastructure.
