Boyle, Daniel Thomas (2023) A shining city on a hill?: American democracy and democratic reform. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The United States is often seen, both internally and globally, as an exemplary model of democracy. Many nations around the world who have democratised saw the US as an inspiration, and rhetoric of many American politicians and its citizens backs its status as a democracy. However, the systems of the United States are filled with contradictions, controversies and problems. From its inception as a republic, the nation has undergone a long and at times troublesome transition to democracy, but how well does it live up to this status? This piece attempts to place a definition on the vague concept of democracy, and more specifically liberal democracy, and to look at how the American model is currently set up, what might be wrong with it and how it could be fixed
