Macklin, Jessica (2023) Too little too late?: policy and unding responses to the Coronavirus pandemic in the UK. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation will assess the effectiveness of the conservative government's policy, PPE procurement and fiscal support for the NHS during the first wave of the Coronavirus pandemic. The research does so by assessing policy implemented during the pandemic, fiscal measures enacted before and during the pandemic and PPE contracts and shortages. This research utilises data from various sources, including the Office of National Statistics (ONS), reports published by NHS conferences and government published statistics. This data includes health spending per head, additional annual costs to NHS Trusts as a result of the pandemic, and weekly deaths throughout the pandemic. This paper concludes that the coronavirus pandemic significantly exacerbated already-existing NHS issues driven by the ideological standpoint and the government's indifference to effectively supporting the NHS before the pandemic. The government should have acted earlier regarding policy and funding to support the NHS accordingly
