Siedlecka, Aleksandra (2023) What are the factors that enable successful statebuilding?: case study of East Timor. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Despite the humanitarian crises, mass atrocities, and famine that plague the fragile states of the globe, the organisation responsible for the maintenance of peace and security in the world, the United Nations, has ceased to engage in statebuilding missions. Nevertheless, the cessation of the project did not mean that the fragile states stopped endangering their inhabitants and international stability and constituting a safe haven for the development of crime. This dissertation establishes the factors that enable the success of statebuilding efforts by examining the case study of East Timor. The analysis establishes the failure factors by examining three works written by prominent scholars in the field. Then it proceeds to the determination of the factors that enabled the international intervention in the first place. Next, it examines the factors that conditioned the success of the statebuilding efforts. Lastly, it compares the success and failure factors, concluding that most of the challenges can be overcome.
