Thompson, Geroge (2023) How and why did the UK Labour Party’s voter demography change in the 1997 General Election and why was this significant?. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

In 1997, Labour managed to achieve a landslide victory with the biggest portion of seats in modern British history. This was likely due to Tony Blair’s engineering of the Labour Party into New Labour, encouraging more of the electorate to vote for Labour than ever before. New Labour took what was traditionally a social democratic party and made it centrist in order to attract more voters. In this dissertation, we will be looking at different demographics, including Class, Region, Age, and Gender, in the hope of finding out how and why Labour was able to expand its voter coalition to encompass more voters from varied backgrounds.
