Telmetidi, Aikaterini-Ilektra (2023) What makes an antifascist movement successful?: lessons from the Greek antifascist movement of 2008-2020. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The present dissertation delves into the factors that have propelled the success of the Greek antifascist movement between 2008 to 2020, and its wider ramifications for understanding and confronting far-right beliefs. This study utilises a qualitative methodology, engaging in interviews with activists that were part of the movement. The research aims to critically analyse the success of the antifascist movement by identifying its key components. Additionally, the study seeks to investigate the underlying reasons for the success of the Greek antifascist movement while examining the factors that either facilitated or impeded its progress. Ultimately, the research endeavours to extract valuable insights from the Greek movement's experience, which can be utilised to inform and enhance future struggles.
The findings underscore the significance of a nuanced strategy, the active participation of the younger generation, legal resistance, and global solidarity in surmounting the far right and tackling the fundamental socio-economic conditions that breed fascism (Takou, 2021; Ellinas, Lamprianou, 2021; Banteka, 2019; Ellinas, 2013; Fekete, 2020). The study in question underscores the imperative for solidarity and cooperation among progressive groups in order to successfully combat the rise of regressive elements in society. The Greek antifascist movement provides crucial epistemological contributions that can inform the praxis and tactics of forthcoming antifascist movements. Such contributions are instrumental in advancing our comprehension of how to construct effective coalitions that can effectively counter far-right extremism.
