Noone, Madison (2023) “She’s just a whore!”: an investigation into public opinions on the legalisation of sex work in the UK. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This study investigated public opinions on sex work and the legalisation of sex work in the UK and aimed to identify any generational differences in these opinions. Previous research on this subject demonstrates various physical and social dangers that sex workers can face including stigmatising views and an increased likelihood of contracting a sexually transmitted infection (Strathdee et al, 2008)- issues that may be resolved by the legalisation and decriminalisation of sex work. Two age groups were investigated: Generation X (1965-1980) and generation Z (1997-2005). Small generational differences were found between these two groups with generation X being more likely to be supportive of the decriminalisation of sex work. A general positive and liberal feminist attitude was observed from both age groups regarding the legalisation and decriminalisation of different forms of sex work, and participants showed awareness and concern for the safety of sex workers. Some stigmatising views were identified such as the idea that all sex workers are exploited or that sex work is inherently dangerous. These results were produced through an online questionnaire that collected both quantitative and qualitative data from participants. Snowball sampling was used to select the sample. In order to analyse the data, descriptive statistics were produced and then an in-depth analysis of the qualitative data was used to support these statistics. Overall, the general public appear to be in support for the legalisation and decriminalisation of sex work in the UK.
