Hillier, Marco (2023) How can the experiences of students at the University of Portsmouth inform our understanding of the relationship between sexual identity and sexual attraction. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This paper examines the relationship between sexual identity and sexual attraction, chiefly with respect to men who have sex with men and women who have sex with women, but who do not adopt an LGB label. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five students at the University of Portsmouth to examine this relationship, as well as provide critique on the methods used by social researchers when studying LGBT+ people. This study identifies several contributing factors to non-disclosure or non-adoption, ranging from ontological issues, erasure of identities, sexism and patriarchy, and distrust towards researchers or their research implements. This study also analyses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the construction of sexual identity, and relates that to issues surrounding reflexivity.
