Abstract

This dissertation consists of a translation extract and a commentary addressing the challenges encountered along with explaining the translator’s decision throughout the translation process. The source text (ST) represents the first approximately 6,000 words of the Spanish fiction novel Océano written by Alberto Vázquez-Figueroa and published in January 1984 (Vázquez-Figueroa, 2021). Vázquez-Figueroa was born in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, grew up in the Sahara Desert and worked in many professions, such as war correspondent, scuba-diver, and movie director (Fundación Juan March, 2016). Due to his job variety, he lived in and travelled through many countries, from mainland Spain through the Dominican Republic to the US. Despite of the fact that Océano is a fiction novel, its story takes place in the Canary Islands and there are many cultural references that form an essential part of the entire story hence it is necessary to convey them into the target text (TT) accordingly.
