Mills, Timothy (2023) Environmental determinism or conscious legitimation? An ecocritical reading of disease, medicine and epidemiology in an imperial context. (unpublished MA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Building on theories originally espoused by Hippocrates in the pre-Christian fourth century BC, the theory of environmental determinism also known as geographic or climatic determinism, holds that the ecology and environment in a given area, fatalistically predetermine the trajectory and development of nations in that locality. In this study, conscious legitimation refers not only to a justification of action but also to more intentional interventions taken by individuals, institutions, and states in order to control and exploit another country both politically and economically. Two recent texts have explored the merits of these competing narratives in an attempt to explain why certain nations have succeeded so well, whilst others have failed so badly.
