Al Subhi, Mohammed Nasser Said (2023) The EU's Sanctions Policy imposed against Russia: understanding the motivations and analyzing the impacts on Trade and energy supplies. (unpublished MA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The EU- Russia is one of the most significant relationships worldwide, but it has been affected by different crises, most recently the Ukrainian crisis. This crisis cast its shadow not only on the European continent but also on the whole world. The sanctions imposed by the West, specifically the European Union, emerged as a tool to halt Russia's moves towards Ukraine. This study offers an analytical view of the EU's motives for imposing economic sanctions on Russia, linking these sanctions to theories of international relations such as complex interdependence and geoeconomics. The study's analyses rely on books, academic articles, research centres, news, and statistical centres. This dissertation compares the European sanctions from 2014-2021 and after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. It also touches on the impact of the sanctions on both parties in the short and long term and how Russia managed to circumvent them.
The study found that 2014-2021 sanctions had minimal effects on Russia due to EU divisions and targeted non-influential sectors. However, according to official figures, post-February 2022 sanctions significantly impacted the Russian economy, although there was some recovery. The EU also felt repercussions because of its economic ties with Russia. Also, it found that the EU heavily relies on long-term economic sanctions. On its part, Russia has entered into agreements with several countries to mitigate the impact of the economic sanctions imposed on it. Figures have shown significant growth in its economic relations with India, China, and Turkey, especially after February 2022.
