Cox, Olivia Grace (2023) Beyond the flame: an evaluation on the legacy of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games with the case study of the Vila Autódromo Favela. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Within this dissertation, we will explore to what extent the legacy bid for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic games was successful. The piece will begin with an introduction to both the case study of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympic games as well as the localised case study of the Vila Autódromo Favela. The dissertation will chronologically detail what needs and promises were laid out for Rio and its people within the successful Olympic bid. It will then continue to examine what was delivered as part of the pre-Olympic build period and post-Olympic legacy continuation. In the final section, we will evaluate to what extent the needs and promises made have been matched by delivery. The piece will discuss shortcomings within the Olympic legacy bid promises as well as analyse what effect this has had on local communities, such as Vila Autódromo. The conclusion will determine whether the mega-event can be deemed a success against a number of major shortcomings in the facilitation of post-Olympic promises.
This thesis will analyse if needs and promises matched with the expectations and supposed transformative power of the Olympics. It will conclude that the event cannot be deemed fully successful through the failure to complete legacy promises as needed. It will recognise that Rio presented its own set of unique challenges during the Olympic timeline which were not relatable for previous hosts. The main findings of the thesis will lead to the conclusion that Rio did fail to deliver on the expectations and needs of the local people when facilitating only partial completion of promises.
