Abstract

Energy access is a critical factor for improving people's living conditions, as it is essential to promote and ensure education, health and economic growth. Although Latin America has made significant progress in electricity coverage in the last 25 years, coverage in isolated rural areas is still challenging because 100 grid extension is too costly and unrealistic to require specific solutions in most countries.
Thanks to technological advances, Solar Home Systems have become an excellent tool for providing energy in these hard-to-reach areas. From the 1970s to the present day, various organisations started developing projects with renewable energy technologies. These projects were implemented through different business models and policy strategies. However, despite the different strategies and models applied over time in other countries, the provision of electricity in rural areas of developing countries continues to face significant challenges
The present study reviewed SHS experiences to promote energy access in Latin America's rural areas. This work aims to identify factors that promote and hinder the provision of electricity to isolated rural Latin American households through Solar Home Systems.
