Galpin, Hannah (2023) An exploration of the use of play in supporting the transition from Preschool to Reception. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation has investigated the use of play in supporting a child’s transition from preschool to reception class. There has been a shift within primary schools to begin to implement a more play-based approach to children’s learning which can be evident from numerous frameworks and policies underpinning practice in early years provisions today. The importance of play has been widely recognised as having a positive impact not only on the holistic development of a child but also their health and wellbeing. The purpose of this study was to investigate the benefits of play centred activities in relation to a child’s development, to consider the use of classroom resources to support a play-based learning and to evaluate techniques/strategies in place to support children during the transition from preschool to primary school. Four questionnaires were carried out with preschool practitioners, reception teachers as well as parents of both age groups to gain an understanding of the learning environment within a setting, views on the use of play and how different professionals work with children and parents to support a smooth transition process. The study concluded that there were a variety of benefits to a play-centred approach and how children from preschool can be supported to begin their formal education.
