Kaur, Navjot (2023) Journeying from war to education: exploring the impacts of war on children’s development, the barriers they face in their education in resettlement countries, and interventions for overcoming them. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The experience children face in war torn conditions can be detrimental to all aspects of their lives. This dissertation has explored the impacts of war on the biological, psychological, and social development of children. With the number of refugee children around the world increasing, it is important to consider and be aware of this vulnerable group. Research suggests that war results in multiple prolonged traumatic experience and can have varying impacts on a child’s development. Many families become displaced, and they are forced to resettle in other countries. In resettlement countries, children face secondary stressors and barriers to their education, despite international laws to protect them. Research suggests that their experiences of war, the educational barriers and their experiences within new school systems can result in poor educational outcomes and limit their opportunities. Interventions used to address these issues have shown to be effective in mitigating the negative impacts, however, research has not identified the effectiveness specifically for refugee children in the long term.
