Abstract

Mental health disorders are impacting young people at an increasingly concerning rate. It appears trauma experiences can be a significant factor in the severity of mental health. This literature review will explore some mental health disorders that 11-19-year-olds are commonly facing whilst also considering what institutions are available to provide support. Depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) all have significant repercussions on a young person’s functioning ability, this is shown through key theories for example, Beck’s (2002) cognitive model of depression. This work aims to compile research from the last decade, sometimes older if it holds significant value, that will explore how important it is to be educated on mental health. The general theme of this dissertation is to prioritise the wellbeing of young people. The focus on mental health in chapter 2 will highlight the compromise it has on welfare, especially when it develops as a result of childhood trauma. The trauma types analysed in this work are physical abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. It became clearer through research that there is an association between being a victim of childhood trauma and developing a mental health disorder, making it integral that support is available. Youth clubs are designed, and in ongoing development, to ensure the protection of young people. It is undeniable that mental health can be an overwhelming concept to approach, however this work concludes that with the right knowledge and mindset that it is possible to provide support for young people in need.
