Schofield, Ossian (2022) Assessing the nature of 21st century employment relations on workers in the United States. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This literature-based dissertation explores the topic of workforce relations in the United States. The process questions the roles that different stakeholders and social forces play in the overall standard of employment conditions and how they interact with one another. It draws on Marxist language to apply historic concepts, such as ‘alienation’, to contemporary phenomena like ‘globalisation’. The dissertation delves into the impacts that arise from differing levels of employment quality both on a macro and micro scale. A case study of the multinational company, Amazon, is constructed to understand such conditions on closer level. The research found that power is overwhelmingly today situated in the hands of corporations, which has a detrimental effect on working conditions. It discovered that this causes conflictual behaviour to arise between workers and employers. The dissertation sought to recommend solutions to the case of Amazon that could be applied to workplaces throughout the country.
