Turner-Brightman, Amber (2022) How does trans-exclusionary feminist discussion manifest on Mumsnet?. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation seeks to analyse posts about personal pronouns on the online forum Mumsnet. Whilst it was originally founded as a space to share parenting advice, Mumsnet has since become known for offering a safe platform to gender-critical feminists. This dissertation explores the key tenets of trans-exclusionary/ gender-critical feminism, why these feminists may use Mumsnet to discuss their beliefs, and how these discussions manifest on the site.
Using Conceptual Metaphor Analysis and Rowe’s impoliteness framework (2015), this research analyses ten threads about pronouns from Mumsnet. It concludes that opinions of pronouns on the site are generally disapproving, and that this is expressed through the application of negative metaphors and frequent use of sarcasm, vulgarity, name-calling, cast aspersions, and non-cooperation- posting styles previously identified as being commonplace on the site (Pedersen and Smithson, 2013).
